Take a Walk on the Wild Side (of North Devon and Exmoor)

North Devon Walking Festival

If you are one of the many walking enthusiasts in the UK or are just looking for something to do on your Camping Holiday in Devon this Spring, then the North Devon and Exmoor walking festival could be for you.

Running from the 29th April to the 7th May 2010 the walking festival promises to be bigger and better than ever before. The festival will be celebrating it's 10th birthday in 2010 so i'm sure you can expect some extra special events to mark the first decade of the festival. There is going to be a focus on sustainability and local produce. THis means that many of the walks will be accessible by public transport, especially some of the one way walks which will make use of the Moor Rover bus route. As for local produce you can expect to see longer walks featuring refreshment stops at some great farmhouse cafes offering lunch and cream teas using all North Devon produce.

Also this year the festival is helping to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the North Devon Coast AONB. There are some special walks to mark this historic date and they will benefit from the knowledge of the AONB team who will be acting as guides on some walks. A particular highlight is sure to be the Explorer Walk that is putting new technology to the test with the North Devon AONB’s handheld GPS on display.

Other new walks include the Combe Martin Silver Trails which will provide a fascinating insight into the short lived mining industry in the area. Also for those that like wild Exmoor be sure to sign up for the walk to an abandoned hamlet out on it’s own.

Also new this year are Exmoor Safaris, these consist of a trip out in a Land Rover with experienced drivers to look for Exmoor Ponies and red deer. These trips are ideal for those that are after a bit of adventure and a chance to see Exmoor wildlife up close.

Around half the walks this year are brand new and old favourites have been reworked to continue interest. For example the Lundy Island trip has bee extended to an all day outing leaving and returning between 8am-8pm. This will provide amble opportunity to explore the Island and ensure visitors have time to stop at the wonderful pub. Shutterflys are also catered for this year with photographic walks led by experts in capturing North Devon’s scenery at it’s best. This means there is a walk suitable for everyone from the most hill hardened rambler to mixed groups on family holidays

Prices for this years walks range from £4.50 to £36 for the Lundy trip. To book walks or find out more please visit http://www.walkingnorthdevon.co.uk/
