Map & Compass Course & Local History Walks

Map and Compass Course - Dartmoor Walking.

A Course with a Devon County Council Qualified Moorland Leader, covering practical land navigation. Grid Refs and Compass Bearings , Pacing and Timing, Route Panning, Clothing and Equipment, Incident Procedure and a whole lot more. It consists of 2 x 2hr evening classroom sessions and 2 x  Navigation walks on Dartmoor (both around 5 miles, with plenty of time to practice along the way).

Courses run in Autumn, Spring and Summer and cost £37.00, which I think is very reasonable. They are small friendly groups max 10 people and we Car share to get out to the walks (go for a cuppa before we come home). Courses have run for over 10 years, mainly in Exeter and also at Newton Abbot, Tiverton and Barnstaple. I will get Compasses and Maps for you if you need them.

Local History Walks.

A rolling programme of walks are held around, within a 20 mile radius of Exeter, with distances varying from 3.5 – 5miles. Longer walks may be arranged at weekends on Dartmoor, as the weather improves

It is a good way of getting out into the countryside, taking some healthy exercise, making new friends and learning a little more about what is around us. All walks are taken at a leisurely pace, with plenty of interest stops along the way. We may go for a cuppa after some walks, if you want to. Car sharing is arranged for those who need a lift and some may be accessible by public transport. Costs range from £3.50 - £4.00, depending on the length of the walk. Full day Dartmoor walks may be a little more. I started doing walks as part of the Adult Education Programmes and that was how I became interested in Local History. I grew up on Dartmoor, but only started walking it around 15 years ago.
